Atkins Clock Company - ‘London’ Model - Shelf Clock
Here is a scarce antique clock in amazing overall condition that has drawn many comments and questions from collectors and other interested people. The solid Rosewood case measures 16-3/4" high x 12-3/4" (at the widest part of the base) x 5-3/8" deep (at the widest part of the base.) The original Atkins Clock Co. 8 day movement has just had a complete servicing (cleaning and time adjustment) and is running excellent and keeping very accurate time. The glass and glass paintings are original and in very nice condition, as is the original paper instructions which are still adhered to the back cover and still very clear. I had new period-correct spade hands installed and purchased a new period-correct pendulum.
Brief History of the Atkins Clock Company of Bristol, Connecticut:
Irenus Atkins formed the Atkins Clock Company in Bristol, Connecticut on West Street around 1859. Atkins was in business from 1859 to 1879 and was regarded as an excellent clock designer and clockmaker during his time. The company specialized in the manufacturing of shelf and wall clocks. The business was sold in 1880 to Carlisle and Harry Barnes who continued in the old Atkins clock manufacturing building until about 1884 under the name Barnes Brothers Clock Company. Although there were several clock related businesses with the name Atkins associated with them, this particular company produced some of the most attractive and now highly collectible clocks.
